Luis and I go back many years. I first met Luis in college. During our Video Production courses, we were put into groups to create various video projects. My group was full of duds. I was doing most of the work and was a bit frustrated. Luis was in a group with two other guys, Tony and Robbie and they were creating really cool projects. So at the end of the semester I walked up to the guys and boldly declared “I’m in your group next semester!” That was the beginning of a life long friendship.
We vowed to create movies together but, alas! Life happened and although we went our separate ways, I always hoped that at some point we would revisit movie making again. Luis now resides on the beautiful island of Maui where our paths crossed again through another common interest: Martial Qigong. Luis has been a diligent student of the martial arts for as long as I’ve known him, but when I became a Naturopath and started studying Qigong and discovered that at the same time he was studying herbology, we had so much more to talk about: healing the body, the power of movement, etc.
In college, Luis was always writing and dreaming of being a writer. I always admired his persistence and belief in himself. His dream has finally become a reality with the publication of his first book The Lantern which you can purchase on Amazon.com and through other sources listed below. So I am thrilled to have him as a part of the Black Qi Activation family. He’s always been family anyway …
What inspired you to start practicing Qigong?
My introduction to Qigong started many years ago from my introduction into the martial arts. Previously, I had practiced Kodokan Judo, earning the rank of Shodan (First degree Black Belt) while living in Florida. After moving to Las Vegas, I was searching for another dojo to join, but I came across a Tai Chi Chuan class taught by Lohan School Of Shaolin instructor Billie Ann Sabala. I was mesmerized by the slow, flowing movments of Yang Tai Chi Chuan. With a single class, I experienced the warm energy of Chi pulsating throughout my entire body. I was hooked, and I eventually became an instructor with the Lohan School Of Shaolin under the guidance of Sifu Steve Baugh. Together with Billie Ann Sabala, we promoted both Tai Chi and Qigong through Lohan School’s Outreach Community Program. Eventually, I moved to Maui, Hawaii and joined the Maui Chinese Martial Arts Academy under the guidance of Sifu Steven Catugal and his Sifu Andrew Lum.
How do you incorporate Qigong into your everyday life and work?
As Tai Chi is also considered a form of Qigong, it has influenced my body mechanics. I find myself moving in accordance with Tai Chi principles. My breathing is another manner that Qigong has influenced my everyday life as I employ diaphragmatic breathing, which massages the internal organs and slows down the heart. Slowing down the heart, may alleviate the effects of stress and anxiety. Breath work is another tool to center the mind in the present moment and help turn everyday activities into expression of meditation.
