When did you first start practicing Qigong?
I was first introduced to Qigong by my Ayurvedic mentor, colleague and friend DeAnna Batdorf founder of the Dhyana Center in Sebastopol California. Because I had used Ayurveda to reverse COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), DeAnna wanted me to learn how to breathe properly through teaching Qigong. I was quite resistant to the idea at first because I was already in school to become a Naturopathic Doctor and massage therapist and I was an Ayurvedic Practitioner. I couldn’t bare the thought of going back to school AGAIN! However, it didn’t take me too long to realize that even though I healed my body of COPD, my body was weak and I still breathed like an asthmatic person. I practiced Qigong on and off for about 10 years before I finally said YES and went through the education and training to became a Qigong instructor. I really didn’t realize the awesome power of Qigong until I began to teach it and witness the changes that took place in my body.
What inspired you to become a Naturopathic Doctor?
It started with a desire to create healthy hair care products for Black hair based on Ayurveda. Then as I began to learn more about Ayurveda, I realized that there were very simple solutions to healing many types of disease, and I was outraged that no one seemed to be educating the masses about natural health options.
Then one of my friends who was a vegetarian was diagnosed with cancer. She was baffled that she could get cancer because she was a vegetarian. When I assessed her diet and her perception of what constituted a “healthy food,” I realized that there was a lot of misinformation out there that needed to be corrected. However, Ayurveda missed the boat a bit on the nutrition side so I needed a modality that would help me fill in the gaps and make my education more complete. The information that I pieced together from a wide array of modalities under naturopathy gave me the tools I needed to help anyone in any situation. My friend was able to accomplish her goal: in less than 2 years she reversed cancer without chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other drugs. Watching her go through that transformation and being a part of her health team was a profound experience for me. It showed me that I have a true passion for guiding people on their paths to radiant health.
So I found what I was looking for in a Naturopathic doctoral program that had a collection of textbooks and manuals that were awesome! Some of the books were cutting edge research, others were out of print or rare because of having been forced underground around the time of the inception of the pharmaceutical industry as we know it today. As I went through the doctoral program, I learned that there were so many ways to heal the diseases of today, but those answers involve activities that are hard to charge money for, like breathing, meditation, empowerment, therapeutic nutrition, movement, etc. It is easier to make people believe that their bodies are weak so that they can be sold drugs or talked into surgery. So I became a Naturopathic doctor out of my love for the body, and a desire to teach people how to rediscover, EMPOWER and fall in love with their true selves and live the radiant life.
How do you incorporate Qigong into your everyday life and work?
I begin each day with Qigong and meditation, even if it is just for a few minutes. Whenever I feel stress, I take the time to breathe so that I may connect in with the truest part of myself and make the best decision in that moment.
I teach Qigong, meditation, dance and a variety of breathing techniques regularly. Right now I teach Qigong/meditation/breathing at Canyon Ranch Resort twice a week. I also present at and design wellness retreats and programs for corporations and luxury resorts, and I integrate Qigong lifestyle strategies and techniques into my motivational speeches, presentations and monthly newsletter.
Tell us about your latest project (or a project that you are really passionate about)
Black Qi Activation – I’m really passionate about this idea of connecting Black and Ethnic people in Qigong practice, education and efficacy development.
Designing Wellness Retreats – Many wellness retreats still do not provide the right type of foods, have too many activities or do not go deep enough to focus on the retreat participant’s individual growth and evolution. I’m really excited about the connections I’ve made with luxury retreats who have the resources to help me manifest my vision and also begin the work of community outreach to people who cannot afford a retreat at a luxury spa.
What do you will emerge from the expression of your work?
I developed 3 Truisms that has become a mantra for my life’s work:
- You have the choice and the power to change your life.
- You have within you the wisdom and ability to achieve and maintain Radiant Health.
- There is no bad part of you; only parts of you yearning for love, acceptance, transmutation.
In addition to the truisms, I hope that people will understand that there is no “us” and “them.” There is only “US” and we are all connected. I realize that on the surface, this statement may seem like a contradiction considering that I have created a website called “Black” Qi Activation. I hope that the Black Qi Profiles page explains why I had to begin with Black/Ethnic people. Although there is no “us” and “them,” our society promotes polarization in every way. It is so ingrained in our psyche that I find the need to build a bridge — through Qigong and through speaking the “vernacular” of the people so that we can find some common ground upon which to stand, communicate and begin to understand each other. There has to be a way for us to reach out to each other and connect so that we can come to the realization that at our core, we are one.
I hope that through my work, people will begin to trust and love themselves more and have the courage to be exactly who they are, allowing God to do its great work through each of them in their own unique way.
